10.21.20 New to MPBR- Meet Nelson

Hi everyone, I'm Nelson! Wouldn't you like to adopt me?
I'm a Texas boy looking for a warm Minnesota home. I'm about 3 months old. I've met other dogs and have done well. I'm a puppy so a another resident dog who has patience or skills with teaching me to settle down would be good. I have not met any cats and would do well with older kids (I might knock down itty bitty ones).
I am still learning that my life is different here and that there will always be food and toys and love. When I arrived in rescue, I was pretty skinny and I was always worried that there wouldn’t be enough food. Now that I found a place with food and toys, I feel like I have to make sure nobody takes them away. I will need help learning to share around other dogs as well as not getting to excited or overeager during meal times.
If you'd like to meet me, please visit www.mnpitbull.com for adoption information & the application.
See more pictures and read more info about me here (if the link doesn't work, my adoption is pending 🥳).

10.20.20 New to MPBR- Meet Joie

You met Spike yesterday, now it’s time to meet his sister, Joie!
She is 6 months old and does well with dogs and kids. Joie was also respectful of the cat in her Texas foster home.
Read more about her here (if the link doesn’t work, her adoption is pending 🎉).
Visit www.mnpitbull.com for adoption information and to fill out and application 🐾

10.19.20 New to MPBR- Meet Spike

Hi everyone, my name is Spike (Lee). I came up from Texas with my sister Joie who you'll meet later.
I'm 6 months old and have some big paws so I'll likely end up being a big boy. Foster mom tells me I have the cutest little speckles ever.
I am good with other dogs but I have not met a cat. I also live with a toddler and, I gotta say, I'm not a huge fan. I'd love to live in a house with older humans, toddlers are scary!
You can read more about me here (if the link doesn't work, MPBR has received multiple applications so my adoption is pending).
You can fill out an adoption application at www.mnpitbull.com.

10.15.20 Volunteer of the Month- Meet Lizzie

September 2020 Volunteer of the Month-

Meet Lizzie!

How did you find out about Minnesota Pit Bull Rescue?

I have always had a soft spot for pitties, so I had followed MPBR on Instagram for quite a while and enjoyed soaking up all the adorable photos! We used to foster for Animal Humane Society but decided we would like to be able to focus specifically on pit bulls, especially knowing that they are so often in need.

Why did you start volunteering for MPBR?

My husband Josh and I are dipping our toes back into the water of dog ownership through fostering after losing our 14-year-old pittie mix Tupelo in November 2019. Josh also has some dog allergies, so fostering has been a good way for us to try out dogs to see if they bother him or not. Although I came in with the intention of fostering, I have loved the community of MPBR and it's been fun to get involved with other aspects of it as well!

How long have you been volunteering with the rescue?

Since April. Like so many others, we felt like it was a good thing to do during coronavirus quarantine.

Poppy
What was the last thing you volunteered for?

I do quite a few reference checks, and I also got to transport adorable Poppy to her forever home. That was great because we tend to prefer to foster older dogs, but I always love to get puppy snuggles when I can!

Where are you from & what do you do for a living?

I’m in St. Louis Park & Marketing for Minnesota Public Radio.

Do you have any pets of your own?

Not at the moment. We lost our 14-year-old pittie mix, Tupelo, in November 2019, and then lost Chula very unexpectedly recently. We are hoping to "foster fail" one of these days!

10.13.20 Foster of the Month- Meet Tamara

September 2020 FOSTER OF THE MONTH-

Meet Tamara!

How long have you been volunteering with Minnesota Pit Bull Rescue?

9 months.

When your friends/family find out you volunteer with MPBR, what do they say or ask?

They are not surprised that we foster pitties, that's for sure. A lot of friends want to know if they can come over and meet the new fosters.

Why did you start fostering for MPBR?

I truly love the bully breed and I have owned 3 myself (I do love all animals though). I really wanted to foster and save a few lives along the way.

Almond (top) Sandra Dee (bottom)

Who was your first foster?

Almond

Who is your current foster?

We just had Sandra Dee but she was adopted not too long ago!

Do you have any pets?

Yes, we have a male AmStaff that is 8 years old now named Max. We also have a Winter Hamster that is about 2 years old.

Where is your favorite dog friendly place to take your pups?

The pet store. Max loves to pick out treats & see the people.

Wilma
Do you have a favorite memory with one of your fosters?

I have very fond memories of all of them. However, I really remember spending great times with Wilma. She came to us while she was still healing from her ACL surgery. She was being kenneled 24/7 before she came to us so she was distant and sad when she arrived and needed lots of love. Every day I would go in the room where she was staying and work. It took her a few days to figure out I was good and wasn't going to hurt her. From then on she really opened up and enjoyed getting loved on. She wanted to be near me all of the time.

When you're not surrounded by dogs, what can you be found doing?

Lately I am near one of the dogs all of the time since the current health situation. I am still working remotely so they tend to want to hang out with me while I am working. I do like to spend time reading, gardening, and getting a much-needed massage in.

Do you have a special tradition you do for your foster pups?

I plan on making a collage of pictures of each foster.

10.6.20 Foster of the Month- Meet Nichole

August 2020 FOSTER OF THE MONTH-

Meet Nichole!

How long have you been volunteering with Minnesota Pit Bull Rescue?

4+ years. I started fostering March of 2016.

Why did you start fostering for MPBR?

I didn’t have a dog and I wasn’t sure if I was ready. My adopted Grandma suggested I try fostering. Little did I know my life would forever be changed after that moment. I did some research and I knew one of my sister’s good friends fostered for MPBR. I didn’t really know anything about pit bulls and I never saw myself owning a pit bull. I always wanted a big fluffy dog like a German Shepperd, Golden Retriever, or a Siberian Husky. Now, I cannot imagine my life without a pit bull. I fell in love with the breed.

Who was your first foster?

Abby (pictured with me above)

When your friends/family find out you volunteer with MPBR, what do they say or ask?

Sometimes I get mixed feelings from my friends and family. Some of them think what I do is incredible, but some don’t know how I let them go or don’t understand. However, if I didn’t let them go, I wouldn’t be able to help the next ones. My permanent and temp fosters (and some I just pupsat for an event) have included Abby, Mick, Heath (for a few hours), Queenie, Porter (for a few hours), Mick, Maisey, Rhodes, Stark (for a few hours), Navel, Bacon, Link, Ted, Emery, and Truly. Obviously, I cannot have 14 dogs…. And I would not trade my time with Truly (my last foster) for anything. That is what keeps me going.

Emery & Bacon

Who is your current foster?

Indy & Poppy (they will be on their way to MN soon)

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I foster failed on Bacon. I foster failed hard to the point where I was e-mailing his case manager in tears over not being able to let him go.

Where is your favorite dog friendly place to take your pups?

Home Depot and training (it is our date night). However, our favorite thing is walking with our friends that we have met through MPBR and training.

Bacon & Truly
Do you have a favorite memory with one of your fosters?

My favorite memory was the first time Truly made the choice to cuddle up next to me. It was an incredible step for her, and it melted my heart. Otherwise, I always love the look on adopters faces when my foster is officially joining their home. It is bittersweet as they are leaving me but joining their family.

When you're not surrounded by dogs, what can you be found doing?

Currently, I am working from home. So, I am always surrounded by dogs. Bacon enjoys crawling into my lap halfway through the work day and bombing my zoom meetings.

Do you have a special tradition you do for your foster pups?

I usually cry! Lol But, no, I do not have a special celebratory ritual after my fosters are adopted.

Do you want to give a special shout out to anyone in the rescue?

Mike and Sue Sweeney have helped me immensely with any training-type questions I have with my fosters. They have been excellent resources. Melissa Graunke has helped a lot also with training-type questions or potential medical-type questions. Amanda, Ashley, Laura… there are too many people to name. I have enjoyed working with everyone involved with MPBR. It has been quite the journey and I have learned so much!
