5.15.19 Featured Foster- April Edition

Meet Amanda!

Amanda & Zoe

Why did you start volunteering?

I was a lucky enough kid to always have a family dog growing up & knew I'd always have a dog in my adult life.  I've always been a major dog person...the kind where I ask every stranger I see with a dog if I can pet their dog 😂.  As a teenager I fell in love with the breed when I met my mom's best friend's pittie Rocko - he was such a meat head & the sweetest most gentle dog. I felt like I had an emotional connection with him even though I only got to see him when we visited them in CA.  As an adult, I was in a serious relationship (who is now my husband) & naturally gained my first dog by welcoming my boyfriend's dog Rudy into the family.  Then we decided to get our first dog together - we hadn't really started looking when I saw a local community posting about some puppies who needed a home. A family in the local community who had never fixed their 2 family pitties had ended up with a litter - most went to family/friends, but a few still needed a home. I saw this picture of this little blue girl & we fell in love, that was our Zoe.  With the unfortunate reputation of the breed, I knew I wanted to show how great they are & have Zoe be a good advocate, which then made me even more 'obsessed' with the breed 😊 I found out about MPBR as one of the local rescues & started following the organization on Facebook & met some of the great people by attending their Puppy Kissing Booth fundraiser event.  This led me to finding out about the trainer (AQK9) that the rescue had partnered with at the time & I just knew this would be the trainer for me and started my long training journey with Zoe. About a year after I started going to training, I finally got my husband on board with becoming a foster with MPBR - his only hesitation had been that he was worried it would be too hard to let the dogs go. I was so passionate about becoming a foster, that I just kept telling him how important it was to me & that the good we would be doing would outweigh the tough part of saying goodbye to a foster. I am so thankful that he agreed to have us start that journey!  It has truly been the most amazing experience which eventually led to us foster failing on one of our fosters & added our 2nd pittie & 3rd dog to the family, Paxton.  And now I'm proud to say that one of my sisters has joined the foster community at MPBR & has an alum of her own, Blanche!

Who is your current foster?

I have a break currently as my foster, Turks, recently went to his forever home!

Turks was Amanda's 15th foster- she deserves this break (although we know it won't last long!)

How long have you been volunteering with our rescue?

Going on 4 years this coming fall.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, my husband & I are a crazy dog family of 3!  Rudy-lab/rottie mix, 10; Zoe-pittie, 7; Paxton-pittie & MPBR alum, 2

Where is your favorite dog friendly place to take your doggo?

Training (I've gone the farthest with Zoe: agility classes, CGC, CGCA, CGCU), up to my sister's cabin, breweries & restaurants with dog friendly patios, hiking/walks, basically anywhere in the car because they all love car rides
😊

When not surrounded by dogs – what can you be found doing?

Umm we’re mostly surrounded by our 3 dogs & 1 foster at any given time 😍 And even when we're doing our hobbies (husband-car/motorcycle stuff & me-jewelry & crafts projects), we're still surrounded by our dogs as they like to intrusively be where we are!  But we do like to try to act like were foodies & love to travel, so often that means leaving the dogs at home.

Do you have a favorite memory with one of your fosters?

Amanda's Fosters
Too many to count...but often the best ones are seeing our dogs bond, show them the ropes & have fun with the fosters; and being able to share them & many memories with my family, which has inspired both my niece & nephew to want to be fosters when they're old enough; and seeing progress when helping fosters overcome any issues, like several extremely shy ones we've had; and of course most importantly seeing each one find their forever family 💜

Collage that was started by Amanda's sister

Do you have a special ritual you do with your fosters at all?

I have an ever growing collage of picture frames, 1 for each foster I've had (my sister gave as a gift for my 30th bday, where she had it started with all the fosters I had had up to that point)...it always warms my heart each time I get to go pick the picture that I'm going to frame & add to the collage.
